Before travelling, check:
- Before buying a ticket online, check whether the website belongs to the transport company, a booking platform or a travel agency. Buying through an intermediary may involve additional costs. Make sure that the connection times are sufficient.
- Compare prices on different sites, especially for international trips.
- Conditions of use of tickets. Check whether tickets booked online are electronic or whether paper versions must be collected at the station.
- Baggage check-in conditions.
- Submission of documents at checkpoints. Documents may vary from one railway undertaking to another. Failure to present the required documents may result in a fine or having to pay the standard fare if, for example, you do not provide proof of entitlement to a discount. Make sure you carry a valid passport or identity card as, even if there are no routine checks, the police may carry them out without warning.
- If under-aged children are not accompanied by an adult, they may, in certain cases, travel under the supervision of on-board staff. It is recommended that they carry valid documentation and authorisation both to travel and to access the services they may require on the train, such as meals.
- Rules for travelling with pets.
- If the train ticket has been sold through an airline together with an airline ticket and the journey starts by train, it is recommended to go to the airline's representative office, which is usually located at the train station. In case of a no-show, there is a risk of being considered a "no show" and the rest of the journey is automatically cancelled without the possibility of claiming a refund or alternative transport.
